How to Avoid Losing Your Dog: Simple Steps Every Owner Should Know
March 9, 2026
Few things are more distressing for a dog owner than realising their dog has gone missing. Dogs are naturally curious, and even the most well-behaved pet can slip out of a gate, follow an interesting scent, or become frightened and run off.
The good news is that there are simple steps every dog owner can take to dramatically reduce the risk of losing their dog.
1. Make Sure Your Dog Is Microchipped
Microchipping is one of the most important things you can do to protect your dog. A microchip contains your contact details and allows vets, shelters, and councils to quickly identify and return your dog if they are found.
Just as important as having a microchip is keeping your contact details up to date. If you change phone numbers or move house, update the microchip registry immediately.
2. Use a Collar and ID Tag
Even with a microchip, a visible ID tag is still incredibly valuable.
If someone finds your dog, a simple tag with your phone number can allow them to call you immediately without needing to visit a vet or shelter to scan the microchip.
Make sure the tag is clear, durable, and attached to a well-fitting collar.
3. Check Your Fences and Gates
Many dogs escape simply because of a weak fence or a gate that doesn’t close properly.
Take a few minutes to walk around your yard and check for:
-
Loose or broken fencing
-
Gaps under fences
-
Gates that don’t latch properly
-
Areas where a dog could climb or jump over
It’s surprising how quickly a determined dog can find a small gap.
4. Always Use a Lead in Public
Even dogs with excellent recall can become distracted by other animals, people, or loud noises.
Keeping your dog on a lead in public areas not only protects your dog but also helps prevent them from wandering into traffic or unfamiliar areas.
5. Train a Reliable Recall
A strong “come” command is one of the most valuable pieces of training a dog can learn.
Practice regularly in safe environments and reward your dog when they return to you. This training can make a huge difference if your dog ever slips away unexpectedly.
6. Be Extra Careful During Storms and Fireworks
Many dogs run away because they are frightened by loud noises such as storms or fireworks.
During these times:
-
Keep your dog safely inside
-
Make sure gates and doors are secure
-
Provide a calm and safe space where your dog feels comfortable
7. Keep Your Dog Well Exercised and Mentally Stimulated
Dogs that are bored or full of pent-up energy are more likely to try to escape.
Regular exercise, play, and mental stimulation help keep dogs happy and reduce the chance that they’ll go looking for adventure elsewhere.
A Final Thought
Dogs are part of the family, and losing one can be incredibly upsetting. By taking a few simple precautions, you can greatly reduce the chances of your dog going missing and help ensure they stay safe.
And remember — regular grooming and care also help you keep an eye on your dog’s health and wellbeing.
